Farewell Tony 1962-2012
I first met Tony ‘Tunnels’ in Bali through Mr Wado. My initial impression was that of a genuine straight shooter. The kind of guy who’d have your back in a fix – the kind of guy you don’t often meet. He was one of those individuals who kept eye contact during conversation… unless of course a pretty feline entered frame… then it was all over – in more ways than one.
Tony’s surf story began in California during the ‘Dog Town’ era… moving later.. to the islands of Hawaii. But it was finally on Kauai, where he got his act together and established his reputation as a fearless charger.
Sharing waves with Mr ‘Tunnels’ in Indonesia was a privilege and allowed me to appreciate a style that existed both in and out of the water. No matter how solid the conditions – he always maintained composure – definitely a great surfer to watch on any given day.
Unfortunately… Bali became the end of his surfing story. Within a few years… cancer entered his life. Remaining positive… he survived the first assault. But unfortunately – within a year – it returned.
During his last year, he resided in Greece with his mum. Our contact was limited to emails, SMS and the occasional chat.
Looking back at those conversations… I was amazed how few regrets he had…
… but I guess .. if you live the life you want… thats how it ends… with a smile on your face.
Rest in peace mate…
See you when I see you…
