Fire it up

Competition amongst the local warungs on JL Raya Uluwatu just gets hotter each year.
That stretch from the petrol station.. up towards the Balangan crossroad and beyond.. has fast become the Gaza strip for local cuisine. What was once just a sleepy Bukit road is now a fully fledged eat street. Last night I dropped by one of my favourite Indo/Chinese warungs for a bite. They offer a great selection of food at ridiculously cheap prices. It’s not the best place (interior design-wise) to hang out, but for take-out it rules. For me, I just can’t get past the Ayam Mentega (butter chicken) and the tofu hot-pot.
Lately I’ve been trying to cut fried oil out of my life, but every time I pass this culinary boulevard on sunset… it’s just impossible not to pull over and have a crack. Life wasn’t meant to be easy… unless we make it so – salamat makan!
note: prices, quality & service can change over time.

Food on The Bukit ….. Indonesian love fried anything to death . The food is limited on JL Uluwatu from Jimbaran to Uluwatu . The best food is Kate,s kitchen (Thai Food) and all the rest, run a poor second . In Town (Kuta,Legain, etc) there is Bali Bakery and Made,s Warung and many good place to eat. Here on the Bukit is Chicken and more Chicken with oil and a little more oil . Then followed by MSG . But there come soon to the The Bukit .Why? Because that is call progress ! I eat at all then places watching the rats eat the offerings, off the small temples .Remember I love this Island for it,s consistent waves and my good friends like Mr Bukit Bear . take care guys and gals
Hey Jim… you should be writing restaurant reviews mate… I reckon there’s a market for your particular kind of reportage…
I like your reviews Bear …, where exactly is this one …, Your padang recommendation was a good one BTW ( at Jimbaran ) and they “are” a nice couple too eh , that RM has given me a new RM Padang fave too , and taken over from my old Fave (just).
@ bigjim …, have you tried the new thai at pecatu , not far from the smaller pecatu Nirmala supermarket (its on the other side of the road than the Nirmala) , I actually prefer this Thai RM,s food than the fancier looking Kats kitchen , and its usually empty too, as no- one is on to it yet.
Davo, glad you’re stoked on that Padang joint in Jimbaran – they’re such genuine people and take pride in their food. The Indo/Chinese warung in question is about 20 meters before Warung Dusun heading south on JL Uluwatu – just after Bali Buddha. The tofu hot pot is worth a look… the reasonable prices make up for the lack of interior design – I usually do bungkus. Btw, that new Thai joint at the Alila Villas turn off is pretty authentic, ate there recently and was fairly impressed. Kat’s kitchen def has a great ambience, but I reckon the menu is a bit dumbed down for the bule palate – that’s probably why it does so well…
Where’s the Nusa Dua warung?
Mertasari Beach at Sanur has a whole bunch of warungs for the locals…after a SUP paddle (sshhh! — strictly for the exercise, I’ll be at Nusa Dua when the new toll road opens), I order a gado-gado with ketupat, which is healthy vegetarian and would only bother a person with a peanut allergy, and it’s Rp 5000. That’s my brunch.
After Kook Hill… turn right at that cross roads with temple in the middle (the one that leads to south Geger, St Regis, etc) – then after about 20 meters its the last warung on the left. It’s just a hole in the wall, easy to miss. Make sure you order is the red sauce chicken – the prawns are also not bad. Good luck…
oh yeah !! I just had a whole west aussie lobster cooked Singapore style on fried noodles at the Sydney Fishos, we can still do that ^ shit down here, problem is though it cost $65; one lobbo, with big sinews in the tail. At least they did chips. Howya doing bearskin? Movin to the groove yet?
All good here Pete – first paddle in 6 months – kook Bear lives. Here on the island, they BBQ lobbos over smoking coals from dried coconut husks – costs about $15 a kilo.
