sunset-set

Sunset.

Surf is solid.

I exit the water.

A crowd forms around the lifeguard tower.

A man lies on a stretcher with a tissue on his head.

He’s not moving.

The man is dead.

A rental board is next to him and the leg rope is broken.

A young girl appears.

She looks at the body and begins howling.

Suddenly an elder woman arrives. The girl and her have the same eyes.

She doesn’t react. She answers the lifeguard’s questions.

The ambulance is here.

A yellow body bag is unwrapped… the body is sealed.

Four tanned men carry the father up the hill.

The wife and daughter follow.

Inside the ambulance the woman is on phone… she weeps uncontrollably.

The reality has set in.

The ambulance door slams… they fade into darkness.

Back on the beach… life carries on… like nothing has happened.

Wow. Stripped down. Bare. Just like death.
